Kay Mathieson had returned to her Caribbean island home after seven homesick years full of hope, hope which was swiftly dashed when she arrived to find poverty and decay everywhere, and the island dominated by the overbearing figure of Nick Coulson, who owned the only other sugar estate and was now trying Kay soon discovered, to buy up the Mathieson concern.
