Description
At the beginning of May 1987 whites in South Africa fought an election that most of them thought would be of crucial importance to the history of their country. The largest number of candidates ever was nominated for this election in which five political parties as well as a small number of independent candidates participated. Furthermore, this was to be the first general election since the founding of both the tricameral parliament and the Conservative Party. In this sense it was the first opportunity to test the white electorate's view on the political dispensation.
