Description
In De Amphitheatro, Lipsius and his tutor Florentius carry on a dialogue during a walk through their beloved Rome. They discuss all aspects of amphitheaters, as for example the gods to whom they were dedicated and the people that commissioned them. But the main part is devoted to the Colosseum and its functions, etc. De Amphitheatris quae extra Romam libellus, the second part, is a description of different amphitheaters outside Rome, such as in Verona, Pola and Nîmes. In both books Lipsius cites many classical authors, poets and church fathers, as usual. In the introduction the text of this edition comes up, but also Lipsius' observations in his period in Leiden, when he wrote these books.
