Description
The Mauritshuis owes its name to the founder of the building: Johan Maurits, Count of Nassau-Siegen (1604-1679). The Royal Picture Gallery has been established there since 1822. The count plays an important role in the museum because of its significance for art, architecture and science. But Johan Maurits' life story is also interwoven with the colonial history of Dutch-Brazil and the transatlantic slave trade. In the exhibition 'Bewogen beeld - Looking for Johan Maurits', the history of Johan Maurits and Dutch-Brazil was viewed from different perspectives. We invited a group of 46 authors to contribute exhibition texts, with the result that each work was accompanied by four to six short texts. Together they give a rich picture of the ways in which you can look at the artworks - all from the permanent collection of the Mauritshuis - and the related histories. This book is a bundle of these texts especially written for 'Bewogen beeld'. Exhibition: Mauritshuis, The Hague, The Netherlands (04.04.-07.07.2019).
