Extensive historical study of political leadership in state of Mexico during second half of 19th century. Focuses on tensions between government and lower echelons of social pyramid, based on study of institution of political "boss" during period, which constituted powerful link in chain of command within country still in process of formation. Explains ways in which mechanisms of domination transformed society but were also resisted and molded from below by popular rural groups and indigenous peoples. Includes fold-out map.
