Description
The contributions in this volume deal with the development of the concept of women in the ancient world, and the reception of that concept in the last century. The authors analyze the meanings given to images of women or men in various texts, and the ways in which ancient and modern authors (including film directors) reshape them. Topics discussed include the changeability of gender in literary texts, literary play with gender sterotypes, the religious roles of women in ancient Greece and Rome, the embodiment of foreignness and otherness by female figures such as Cleopatra and Medea, the reception of such images in literature and film, and the role of gender order in the intellectual history of ancient Greece.
