Reginald Wellard has just - to his surprise - written a novel ("Bindweed") and - to his greater surprise - it is becoming very popular. His lovely and young wife Sylvia is supportive ("Of coruse you wrote a novel, darling. Fancy!") but is not able to engage him intellectually. This leads to his questioning of what marriage is and how well his own functions.
