Second world war fiction written from the German perspective near the end of the war. By this time the decent German soldiers had realised the war was lost (and indeed had realised Hitler's faults) but not all had. The book shows how they tried to carry themselves with dignity and professional pride at this time. It's also pretty standard wartime fiction!
